| The Scenic Route: Camping for Trailblazers
Some campers enjoy nothing better than a brisk hike along scenic trails full of wildlife and spectacular views. Here are two of the best hiking parks in the United States, with stunning scenery and interesting environments.
Glacier National Park
Voted the best overall hiking park by Backpacker magazine, Glacier National Park is the number one stop for aggressive hikers seeking the ultimate view. Located in Montana, Glacier National Park has over 700 miles of well-maintained trails and offers hikers the experience of walking in the clouds. Campers can literally hike so far up a mountain at Glacier that they are among wisps of white clouds. Designated as a World Heritage Site in 1995, it’s no wonder some hikers have been known to compare this park to heaven.
As with most national parks, a reservation is required at Glacier. There are strict rules and regulations involving clean-up, noise ordinances, and wildlife preservation. Rangers ask that campers respect this national park and leave no trace behind.
Olympic National Park
Olympic National Park is located in Washington state and is another destination located high on the list of any dedicated hiker. This park has three different ecosystems and is home to eight plants and 15 animals that can’t be found in any other part of the world. Hikers will be thrilled at the breathtaking mountain views, captivating forests, and mystic coastlines. The best time to visit Olympic National Park is during the summer months when weather is both warmer and dryer. Be advised that campers should bring warm clothing and rain gear during any part of the season, however, since weather patterns can be somewhat unpredictable. Most campgrounds have toilets, trash receptacles, and clean water; however, there are no showers, laundry facilities or electrical hookups. While vacationing in Olympic National Park, take advantage of as many activities as possible. This park offers spectacular hiking, kayaking, horseback riding and fishing. |
